Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
The Hummingbird by Sandro Veronesi
Why I have it: Not sure.
Summary: Marco Carrera is ‘the hummingbird’, a man with an almost supernatural ability to remain still amid the chaos of an ever-changing world. The story examines the emotional challenges that fill his life.
I’m thinking: No – the conversational style will likely begin to irritate me.
These Precious Days: Essays by Ann Patchett
Why I have it: Because of Beck’s review.
Summary: “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these essays.
I’m thinking: Yes (I think I like Tyler’s nonfiction more than her fiction).
The Book of Mother by Violaine Huisman
Why I have it: Not sure.
Summary: Story about a daughter’s inextinguishable love for her manic-depressive mother, and their joyful and chaotic life in Paris, which changes when Maman is hospitalized after a third divorce and a breakdown.
I’m thinking: Yes.
The Book of Mother is tempting! I’ve not heard of it or the author, I’ll be interested to hear how you find it.
I’d heard really great things about The Hummingbird so have it on my Kindle.
Thoroughly enjoyed These Precious Days, particularly the way Patchett writes about friendship.
I’m not tempted by Patchett after my husband disliked her Bel Canto. And that Book of Mother sounds triggering for me, so… it would be a no for all three of these for me.
I have The Book of Mother on my radar because of the International Booker…
