Sample Saturday – night shift, the mind, and the post

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

Nightshift by Kiare Ladner

Why I have it: Spotted in Susan’s list of favourite books for 2021.

Summary: When Meggie meets enigmatic Sabine, she recognizes in her the person she would like to be. Meggie gives up her daytime existence and her reliable boyfriend in favour of working the same nightshifts as Sabine.

I’m thinking: Yes.

The Life of the Mind by Christine Smallwood

Why I have it: Not sure.

Summary: No one but her boyfriend knows that Dorothy has just had a miscarriage, not even her two therapists. Nor can she bring herself to tell the other women in her life. The freedom not to be a mother is one of the victories of feminism. So why does she feel like a failure?

I’m thinking: Yes.

Long Live the Post Horn! by Vigdis Hjorth

Why I have it: Think I spotted it during Novella November (it’s 149pp).

Summary: Ellinor, a media consultant, is given an unusual new task – off she goes to meet the Norwegian Postal Workers Union, setting the ball rolling on a strange and transformative six months.

I’m thinking: Maybe.
