Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye. This week, all three come from Vogue’s list The Best Books to Read in 2021.
Aftershocks by Nadia Owusu
Summary: Owusu’s mother abandoned her and her baby sister. Years later, her beloved Ghanaian father died, leaving the girls with a stepmother they didn’t like, adrift. Owusu is a woman of many languages, homelands and identities – Rome, Dar-es-Salaam, Addis Ababa, Kumasi, Kampala and London. She started to feel fault lines in her sense of self – and they eventually ruptured.
I’m thinking: Yes.
Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters
Summary: Reese, Amy/Ames, and Katrina. Two have transitioned or de-transitioned, two want a baby, and one is pregnant. Could the three of them form an unconventional family and raise the baby together?
I’m thinking: Yes.
Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
Summary: When Zauner’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Zauner reclaimed the gifts of her Korean heritage – taste, language, and history – that her mother had given her.
I’m thinking: Yes (grief and food combined in one memoir!)
The Nadia Owusu calls most to me from this clutch, not that I’ve read it.
Detransition, Baby is great. Crying in H Mart really appeals to me, too. I’m going to see if I can get a review copy when it comes out in paperback.
All look interesting and very different.
