Sample Saturday – an accident, a lovechild, and a vacation

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

This week, all three come from Susan’s post about June paperback releases.

The Darlings by Angela Jackson

Summary: Teenager Mark, the school golden boy, accidentally kills his best friend in a freak accident. He spends the next decade drifting between the therapy couch and dead-end pursuits. Then along comes Sadie, a mender by nature, and Ruby, a school friend who witnessed the accident.

I’m thinking: Yes – stunning opening.

The Margot Affair by Sanaë Lemoine

Summary: Margot Louve is a secret: the child of a longstanding affair between an influential French politician and a prominent stage actress. This hidden family exists in stolen moments in a small Parisian apartment on the Left Bank. Until Margot decides to be a secret no longer.

I’m thinking: Yes (it’s a style thing).

Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam

Summary: Amanda and Clay head to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a quiet vacation in a luxurious rented home. But a late-night knock on the door from the couple who own the house, telling them that a sudden blackout has swept the city, unsettles them.

I’m thinking: No (style didn’t appeal).

  1. IMO you should have titled this post ‘a vacation, an accident, and a lovechild’ because we all know sh!t happens.

  2. The Darlings wouldn’t appeal except that your comment about the stunning opening makes me think this could be an interesting take on a topic that’s been around for yonks
