Book, because:
- although Emma Thompson is excellent in the movie, I can’t forgive her for the atrocity that was Last Christmas.
- I bawled (the movie, not so much).
- the ongoing relationship between the central characters is more believable in print.
Book, because:
Interesting, I actually felt I understood the arguments better in the film that I did in print.
I think either way, it’s a compelling story.

It has only recently appeared on Netflix – I was waiting patiently s it was one that was on at the cinema one week and then completely disappeared the next.
I’ve ordered it from QuikFlix, though they say there’s a long wait. (We are so last century here, we watch DVDs!)
I wasn’t that enamoured of the book. Film was good. Problem with both was I couldn’t believe in the relationship between the lawyer and the boy.
I think I enjoyed the book because it was the first McEwan I’d read in a while that felt like a ‘return to form’ (there were a few around the time of Sweet tooth that didn’t do much for me).
I really like Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci, but for some reason this really didn’t appeal to me. I’ll stick with the book (it’s in the TBR somewhere…)
Tucci was excellent. I really like Thompson as well. She has a wicked sense of humour but Last Christmas was so bad in so many levels and really, it was her project. 🙁
A friend of mine is a massive George Michael fan and will never forgive her…
I found a free copy of the book a year or so ago but haven’t picked it up yet. I don’t think I even realized there was a film!

Controversially, I usually prefer to watch the film first. Because then I know that I like the story, and that I have a better experience awaiting me. Done the other way round, I’m almost always disappointed in the film adaptation.

Thankfully, I didn’t see Last Christmas so my love for Emma can remain untainted. I’m tempted by this movie, so hoping that tempering my expectations will be enough.
It will certainly be enough. The movie is good and very well cast.
