Sample Saturday – war trials, a walk, and the internet

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

The German House by Annette Hess

Why I have it: Spotted on Susan’s December releases list.

Summary: For 24-year-old Eva Bruhns, World War II is a foggy childhood memory. When she begins working as a translator for a war crimes trial, she questions her family’s silence on the war.

I’m thinking: Yes.

Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino

Why I have it: Heard the author speak at the 2019 Broadside Festival.

Summary: A collection of essays exploring the self-delusion that exists in our lives (including that fuelled by the internet and social media).

I’m thinking: Yes.

The Salt Path by Raynor Winn

Why I have it: Spotted at Booker Talk.

Summary: Within days, Raynor and Moth’s lives collapse – Moth is diagnosed with terminal cancer and their home is repossessed. They impulsively decide to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset.

I’m thinking: Yes.

  1. Your summary of The German House makes me think of the fights we had in our family about my opposition to the Vietnam War. Eva, to remember the War as a child will be more my mother’s age, but I wonder now what thunderbolts young German radicals tossed at their parents for their complicity in Hitler’s war.

  2. The Salt Path was an amazing book. I have started the German House. Both deserve a big Yes. Will investigate the other mentioned. Reading as fast and I can but not so fast as to not enjoy! I look forward to Sample Saturday. Thanks.

  3. I haven’t read The Salt Path but a recent readers group meeting two fellow readers had a really heated debate about it. One had loved it and the other had really disliked it. Do keep it, so that I can finally come to a decision as to whether to read it or not.
