Bookish (and not so bookish) Thoughts

01. I’ve had so much fun over the last two weeks – Home, I’m Darling (the sets! The costumes!); a long lunch at Moondog (I can highly recommend the avocado dip paired with a Moondog pale ale); Pseudo Echo, Rick Astley, and a-ha in concert at Rockford Winery (a-ha had the top billing but really, it was all Rick), and…

02. Margaret Atwood in conversation with Virginia Trioli. I didn’t take any notes – instead, I just enjoyed Margaret’s very, very dry sense of humour and her passion for the things that she cares deeply about (notably climate change). I particularly loved the bit when Trioloi pressed her about the ‘pressure’ to write a sequel to Handmaid’s – Margaret’s response was simply “Other people’s expectations are their problem…”

03. And last weekend, Melbourne streets were devoted to the Zorba and roasting lamb, for the annual Greek Festival. Fun fact: Melbourne has the largest Greek population of any city in the World outside of Greece.

04. The Australian Book Industry Awards 2020 longlists were announced this week – a huge number of categories, a huge range of books. Continuing my Stella trend, it’s all a bit overwhelming…

05. And then there’s the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2020 longlist (I’ve read two and own another one).

06. The cover of Trent Dalton’s new book is spectacular.

07. Summer Sisters the television series.

08. One for the gin bucket-list

09. I’m obsessed with Iceland’s Eurovision entry – the keytars are next level. And the dancing. And their windcheaters. Related: this track is made to be listened to on the cross-trainer.

  1. That Dalton cover is magnificent – as is, in another way, your Eurovision clip. Haha, what a hoot.

I’m going to try to read The yield next to make some foray into the Stella! (I say “try” not because I expect it to be hard but because I am so behind in my review reading.)

  2. I have Atwood’s The Testaments as audiobook for my next trip, this weekend I hope. Loved the Iceland video – but not upbeat enough to be winner, not that I’ve ever watched. Mmm Greek, they do very good roast vegetables, you know.
