Dora: A Headcase by Lidia Yuknavitch
Why I have it: Spotted on Susan’s list of paperbacks.
Summary: Ida needs a shrink, or so her father thinks, and he sends her to a psychiatrist. Immediately wise to the head games of the shrink, whom she nicknames Siggy, Ida hatches a plan to secretly film Siggy and make an experimental art film. But something goes wrong.
I’m thinking: Maybe (interesting style but possibly ‘too much’). Anyone read it?
The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal
Why I have it: Rory’s Instagram.
Summary: Two sisters, one farm. A family is split when their father leaves the inheritance entirely to younger daughter Helen, while the eldest, Edith, struggles to make a living. With the proceeds from the farm, Helen builds a successful brewery. Yet one day, Helen finds she needs help – asking proves difficult.
I’m thinking: No (but that could change depending on Rory’s review).
Hannah and Emil by Belinda Castles
Why I have it: An interesting link in Shelley’s Six Degrees chain (and I loved Bluebottle).
Summary: Post WWI, Hannah, a Russian Jew, is working in Brussels. She meets Emil, who has just crossed the border on foot from Nazi Germany, leaving tragedy in his wake. They make a new life in England; WWII strikes; and Emil, an enemy alien, is transported to Australia. Determined to find him, Hannah sets off on a dangerous journey. The story is based on the lives of the author’s grandparents.
I’m thinking: Maybe (I wasn’t immediately hooked).
