The Miniaturist – Book vs. TV Series

TV series (which is saying a lot because I loved the book).

  • visually, a beautiful production (especially Nella, who is portrayed as a splash of colour against the dark backdrop of 17th century Amsterdam)
  • the gothic element (the miniaturist) works better on screen (it was sometimes a stretch in the book)
  • the final scenes, which are memorable in the book, are absolutely gut-wrenching on screen.

Book. TV series. (it’s free to watch on SBS in Australia).

  1. I had not read the book but went ahead and watched the TV series anyway when it was shown here in the U.S. I liked the show a lot but, as usual, thought the book would probably be better. Thanks.
