Sample Saturday – an inspiration, a professor, and sisters

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye. This week, all three books are titles from my ‘I’m waiting for…’ list.

The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer

Summary: Greer, a shy college student, meets Faith Frank, the dazzlingly pillar of the women’s movement. Greer, madly in love with her boyfriend but still longing for something that she can’t quite articulate, suddenly finds her plans for the future change.

I’m thinking: No – I usually love campus-lit but this story seems a little contrived.

Eventide by Therese Bohman

Summary: In her forties and childless, Karolina Andersson is adrift after the breakup of a long relationship. She finds fulfillment in her work, but when she starts advising a confident new postgrad student, emotional and professional complexities ensue.

I’m thinking: No – LOVE the cover but the opening chapter was bland.

Everything Here Is Beautiful by Mira T. Lee

Summary: Two sisters, Miranda and Lucia, struggle with  the boundaries of their relationship after the death of their mother and Lucia’s battle with mental illness.

I’m thinking: Maybe – could be persuaded by the right blogger…

  1. I enjoyed Everything Here Is Beautiful; I have a 4-star review up on Goodreads. Probably wise to avoid the Wolitzer if you thought it was contrived just from the sample. I liked it well enough but didn’t think it was very original, and there are probably better Wolitzer novels out there I could have started with.
