Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye. This week, all three picks are from Sarah’s Book Shelves Summer Reading Guide.
Bachelor Nation by Amy Kaufman
Summary: It’s reached ‘iconic reality tv’ status but why has The Bachelor been so ‘successful’ (viewer numbers, not happy, lasting marriages)? Kaufman goes behind the scenes – the real-life version of UnREAL.
I’m thinking: Yes (can’t explain why I watch The Bach, but not afraid to admit that I do).
Heating & Cooling: 52 Micro-Memoirs by Beth Ann Fennelly
Summary: Fennelly’s 52 micro-memoirs offer glimpses into a lived life as a wife, mother, writer, and observer.
I’m thinking: No. The sample was the table of contents… (but I love the cover).
Unravelling Oliver by Liz Nugent
Summary: Oliver and Alice write and illustrate award-winning children’s books together. One evening, Oliver beats Alice, leaving her in a coma. The couple’s friends and neighbours try to understand what could have driven Oliver to commit such a horrific act
I’m thinking: Yes. Rarely do I get sucked into suspense so quickly.
I have read Nugent’s other books (though not Oliver yet). She is a master of a killer opening paragraph that pulls you in. Read it, then I will 😉
Haven’t read any of her others but the opening scene of this book is really good.
I don’t think any of these are for me, but I’m fully prepared that you will change my mind if you rate the Nugent highly!
I’m a tough customer when it comes to thrillers so will certainly be letting everyone know if it passes muster.
I’d heard a lot about Unraveling Oliver but I was on the fence about it. Looking forward to reading your thoughts. 🙂
There seems to be a lot of support for me reading Oliver 😀
Oh my gosh – I hate it when a book is so short that the sample is just the intro pages! But, I did really love that little book! If you read Bachelor Nation, there’s a section about the history of dating shows on TV….just skim/skip that part!
And thanks for the shout-out!
