Why I have it: a suggestion by Goodreads based on books in my ‘Want to Read’ list.
Summary: Insight into what it’s like to live with psychosis over a decade, in which bouts of acute illness are interspersed with periods of sanity.
I’m thinking: Maybe. Interesting start but the style seems forced.
The Boy on the Shed by Paul Ferris
Why I have it: Listed in this article.
Summary: Ferris became a professional footballer at 16 but this is not a sports memoir – rather, it focuses on themes of family, the Catholic Church, the Troubles and illness.
I’m thinking: No (well-written but didn’t grab me).
Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood
Why I have it: Popped up when I was researching the best books of 2017.
Summary: Poet Patricia Lockwood, returns to the American Midwest to live with her parents (with her husband in tow). Notably, her father is a gun-toting, guitar-riffing Catholic priest, who found a loophole and was able to enter priesthood despite already having a wife and children.
I’m thinking: Yes (there’s a touch of Running With Scissors about it).
