Sample Saturday – a utopia, a rom-com, and a hospice

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

Perfect Little World by Kevin Wilson

Why I have it: Spotted on Tanya’s Best of 2017 list.

Summary: An awkward but charming child psychologist creates a utopian community where children are raised collectively – things quickly unravel.

I’m thinking: Yes – the prologue hooked me.

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Why I have it: Spotted on Janet’s 2017 Reading Bingo list.

Summary: Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman work together. They hate each other. And hate is just as strong emotion as love…

I’m thinking: No – it’s billed as the ‘2017’s funniest rom-com’ but it didn’t make me laugh.

Before Everything by Victoria Redel

Why I have it: Spotted on Susan’s Books of the Year list.

Summary: A group of women who have known each another since they were girls come together when Anna, the ‘bright spark’, enters a hospice.

I’m thinking: Yes, although will be careful with timing of reading (I don’t want it to overlap with my palliative care biography writing).

    • Fairly certain I could predict the outcome from the blurb (which would be okay if there were laughs along the way but I didn’t laugh once in the sample chapters so I will give it a miss).

  1. The Redel appeals – I’ve worked in a few hospices and palliative care is my favourite area to work in. The Hating Game sounds awful to me, although promoting it as 2017’s funniest rom-com makes it almost impossible to live up to the hype – if I was the author I’d be asking the publicist to rein it in a bit!
