Sample Saturday – a movie star, coming home, and seeds

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

This week, all my samples were chosen from #6degrees lists (from findingtimetowrite, A Life in Books, and Brona’s Books).

Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates

Summary: The inner and spiritual life of Norma Jeane Baker / Marilyn Monroe, reimagined.

I’m thinking: Yes but do I have the strength for 1115 pages…?

Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler

Summary: Four friends, born and raised in small Wisconsin town. Now they’re husbands and fathers, and returning home – shared memories, clashes and the realisation that things change.

I’m thinking: Yes, interested in a story about four male friends.

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

Summary: Janie, 16, is married off to an old man with sixty acres. Endures two stifling marriages before meeting the man of her dreams, who offers not diamonds, but a packet of seeds.

I’m thinking: Don’t know – unfortunately the sample was acknowledgements and reading group notes!

    • Too often the story about friends is from a female perspective – which is fine but I like reading ‘relationship’ stories about male friends (which was probably why I found A Little Life so engrossing).
