Sample Saturday – a vegetarian, an almost-orphan, and a tragedy

sample-saturday-4

Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.

The Vegetarian by Han Kang

Why I have it: Won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize

Summary: Haunted by bloody nightmares, Yeong-hye’s decides to purge her mind by renouncing meat. Her decision is a shocking act of subversion. Things get out-of-hand.

I’m thinking: Yes. Instantly hooked.

The Unseen World by Liz Moore

Why I have it: Because I loved Moore’s last book, Heft.

Summary: Ada is raised and home-schooled by David, her brilliant, eccentric father. David directs a computer science lab which begins to gain acclaim at the same time that his mind begins to falter. Ada is left to fend for herself.

I’m thinking: Yes (not just because it starts with a lobster dinner and gin rickeys).

LaRose by Louise Erdrich

Why I have it: First spotted on The Book Club, read nothing but great reviews since then.

Summary: Man shoots his neighbour’s five-year-old son by accident. Man gives the grieving parents his own son, LaRose, as a means of retribution (and in accordance with an ancient Ojibwe tribe tradition).

I’m thinking: Yes, even though it might/will break my heart.
