My husband grew up in a pop-culture vacuum. I’m not quite sure how it happened but while the rest of us were committing the Grease soundtrack to memory and eagerly awaiting the next John Hughes movie, he was doing I-have-no-idea-what.
We regularly have conversations about movies that go like this:
Me: Have you seen X?
Him: No.
Me: Seriously? Are you sure?
Him: Yes and yes.
Me: But then how does X, Y and Z have any context for you?
Him: It doesn’t.
Me: *……*
When I discovered he hadn’t seen The Sound of Music I almost had to reconsider our whole relationship. Honestly.
And the list kept growing. In fact, thinking of movies that defined the 70s/80s/90s that he hasn’t seen has almost became a party game. Note, they’re not necessarily good movies, but they’re ones that you’d almost have to work hard to avoid.
So, at the expense of my husband, here are ten movies (apart from The Sound of Music) that he hasn’t seen (that everyone else in the world has):
01. Heathers
02. Grease (seen a few key scenes but hasn’t watched the whole thing)
03. Pretty in Pink (and Sixteen Candles)
04. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off*
05. Flashdance
06. Dirty Dancing
07. Revenge of the Nerds
08. the Rocky series
09. Stand By Me
10. Top Secret

I just re-watched Stand By Me last night. It’s so good. What a pity we can’t see what River Phoenix could have become as an actor.

Fun fact: Out of all the movies on your list, I’ve only seen Grease. Can you believe it?! Luckily, my partner and I are on an 80s movies kick right now, so we’ve got a ton of those on our to-be-watched list. I’ll have to add the ones that aren’t already on there. Great list for this week! 😀

I’m with your husband, I haven’t seen any of those, though Sound of Music was one of the nine movies I saw growing up – the first was the Ten Commandments, and so was the second, we moved towns while the movie spent two years making its way around Victoria.
That’s kind of funny that you kept seeing Ten Commandments. But seriously Bill, you need some of these films in your life (especially the very dark Heathers and the very silly Top Secret. And La Bamba for all sorts of reasons).
I frequently have conversations with my Mister like that. I love your list I haven’t seen a few of them in a long time. I love Grease. I frequently treat my mister to singing along to the movie whenever it’s on. I swear he lived under a rock sometime with the movies he hasn’t seen too lol.

And of your mentioned 10 I have watched only 3 — Grease, Flashdance, and Dirty Dancing. That’s it. I think I’ve seen almost all in your HM though!
I have fond memories of seeing The Sound of Music on Broadway (NYC) in 1964, then the movie (1965), then taking a family ski vacation to the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont (1967), when Maria and many of her grown up brood were still in residence…magical memories!
I’ve also seen all ten of the movies on your list…an embarrassing confession, knowing that I probably should have been using those hours more constructively…HA!
Love this spin on the TTT topic! And that’s CRAZY your husband hasn’t seen these movies! My husband hasn’t seen Dumb and Dumber…he decided he purposely wasn’t going to see it b/c everyone else loved it. Just to piss people off. Haha.

LOL I was so sure I was going to be able to say I hadn’t seen any you listed (because I also seem to be the one saying “nope, I’ve never seen that one”, like with Mean Girls, which everyone but me seems to have seen) but shockingly I’ve seen several on your list! I think I’m only lacking three: Revenge of the Nerds, the Rocky movies and Bill and Ted. Some of the others you listed are total favorites. Your husband must miss out on even more pop culture references than I do. LOL

This is great! My coworker is like this too. I’ll say random phrases from movies/tv, like “I’m so excited, I’m so excited, I’m so…. scared” and there’s nothing from her. It honestly baffles me.
To be fair, I haven’t seen Revenge of the Nerds or Flashdance, and I’ve never even heard of Top Secret.
My husband is he same way. He has, however, seen Chariots of Fire many times.
But I know what he was doing – he was swimming. Competitive swimming was his mother’s way of keeping him out of trouble. But his mother loved Chariots of Fire. 🙂

Great list! Brought back so many memories. Thanks for sharing. I HAVE seen all of the ones you listed except for Heathers and Wayne’s World. I grew up watching lots of movies, and now I’m more into books, although I’ve always been an avid reader, and the 70’s and 80’s were my main growing up years.

Ha, I think my husband probably has a very similar list. I forgot all about Flashdance and Dirty Dancing while I was making my list this week. And now I need to watch them again, just to make up for it!

hahahaha… So that pop-culture vacuum you reference? I do believe I was in there as well. I watch little to no movies and I had the same problem with my partner… just the opposite. He made me watch The Breakfast Club and Top Gun and loads of others that he couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen. I have seen Grease.. and Ferris Bueller.. and Dirty Dancing.. and all the Rocky. I read Stand By Me, does that count? haha But the rest, nope. I’ll have you know I feel terrible though.
Haha. This made me laugh. It’s like my OH who’s never seen any of the TV shows of my youth, such as the Brady Bunch, Gilligan’s Island, I Dream of Jeanie, Get Smart etc, because he grew up in Ireland.
So ashamed that I haven’t seen most of these – Heathers, Flashdance, Revenge of the Nerds, The Rocky series, Stand By Me, AND Top Secret. Yes, I need to get on these!
