I haven’t been shouting from the rooftops about new releases this year – not because there’s been a lack of ace new books but because I’ve been focusing my reading on what’s been languishing in the TBR stack.
But thanks to the magic that is NetGalley, a few have come my way… This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is all about the 2016 new releases that have made my heart sing.
01. The Portable Veblen by Elizabeth McKenzie – my favourite quote this year remains –
“I want to meet muckrakers, carousers, the sweet-toothed, and the lion-hearted…”
02. Wilfil Disregard by Lena Andersson – cool, crazy, and had me screaming at characters the way I sometimes scream at the tele.
03. My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout – this has lingered (in a good way).
04. The Girls by Emma Cline – I’m only halfway through but so far, excellent.
Next up, the new releases that I’m busting to read. Busting, I tell you.
05. The Paper House by Anna Spargo-Ryan – because I do like books that make me cry.
06. Three Martini Lunch by Suzanne Rindell – hoping it matches The Other Typist.
07. The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney – family tensions, New York and an inheritance – what’s not to love?
08. Be Frank With Me by Julia Claiborne Johnson – I’ve earmarked this one for my next beach holiday – light, fun fluff.
09. Hot Milk by Deborah Levy – hoping it matches Swimming Home.
10. Our Magic Hour by Jennifer Down – another book to make me bawl.
Be Frank With Me looks like a fun read! I hope you enjoy the ones you’ve yet to read!
I thought so too – I’m putting it in the same category as something like The Rosie Project (perfect holiday reading).
All! I want them all!
My TBR isn’t going anywhere…
I’m actually feeling a bit up myself about how disciplined I’ve been with the TBR stack this year…
Loved Wilful Disregard, My Name is Lucy Barton and The Nest. Hope you enjoy the last one as much as I did.
I think it was your review that put The Nest on my radar!
Oh, excellent. Pleased to hear that.
Oh what a timely post! I’ve been trawling through my followed blogs to see who recommended Portable Veblen. I’ve just finished it, and am in the process of reviewing it. I wanted to give credit to the blogger who put me onto it. Should have known it was you! I loved this book – thank you!
Thank you and I’m glad you enjoyed it (as you would appreciate it, it’s a bit of an odd book!).
Odd, in the best way.
I loved Portable Veblen and Lucy Barton! Now I’m curious about The Nest and I definitely want to read The Girls.
Lots of noise about The Girls at the moment and all justified – it’s very well written.
I finished reading The Girls last week and unfortunately it wasn’t for me – the writing was beautiful, but I wish that I would have known less about the actual Manson “family”/murders, because I feel like then I would have enjoyed Cline’s book a bit more. I am happy that you are enjoying it though – I have a feeling that book will be turned into a film very soon…
Thanks for sharing these and happy reading! 🙂
I don’t actually know much at all about the Manson murders and have deliberately avoided finding out – I figured I’d take the book at face value and then hit google after I’ve finished. And yes, I agree, it’s film material. I sometimes think that authors write with a film in mind…
My book group is reading Lucy Barton in a few months — glad to see it on your list! Our Magic Hour sounds terrific, and I’m been hearing so much about The Girls this week. Great list!
Lucy Barton is a good book group pick – there’s lots to talk about from the perspective of being a parent AND having parents.
I hope Three Martini Lunch is as good as The Other Typist, too! Can’t wait to read it.
I haven’t heard as much noise about Three Martini Lunch – I guess that could be taken as good or bad?!
I love seeing all these lists but my TBR list doesn’t like it. I haven’t read any of these but will check them out.
