I didn’t get around to posting this yesterday…
Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
The Paper House by Anna Spargo-Ryan
Why I have it: Have followed Anna on Twitter for years – she’s witty and serious and smart and her writing gets to the guts of things.
Summary: Heather and Dave have found the perfect place to raise their first child. The house has character. And then, without warning, that life is over.
I’m thinking: Yes. It’s going to make me cry a lot. But I love it.
The After Party by Anton Disclafani
Why I have it: Spotted on this Huff Post list (which includes Charlotte Wood – yay!)
Summary: 1950s Houston, two friends – devoted to Joan since childhood, Cece is either her chaperone or her partner in crime, depending on whom you ask.
“It was the one constant in our friendship: she would leave and I would look for her. Until I would not.”
I’m thinking: Yes, this is exactly the kind of fluff I like (although I really should read Riding Camp first, given that it’s in the TBR stack…).
Kauthar by Meike Ziervogel
Why I have it: Because I enjoyed Magda.
Summary: Lydia, a Londoner, converts to Islam, marries Rafiq and moves to Baghdad. It’s a story of love and delusion.
I’m thinking: No, didn’t grab me.
The Paper House gets my vote – looks excellent!
The opening chapter made me cry…. Will have to save it for a weekend at home!
The After Party gets my vote!
Have you read Riding Camp? It got really mixed reviews among bloggers I follow.
I thought I’d requested Anna’s book but haven’t received it. Must confess I’m not sure what it’s about but must check it out!
It didn’t pop up on my ARCs radar 🙁 but nonetheless, it’s one I’m going to break my book-buying-ban for.
