1. Last Sunday morning I woke my children up at 3.45am so that we could head into the city for White Night. It was worth it.
2. Especially because they went to bed really, really early on Sunday night, leaving me to watch War & Peace in peace…
3. If someone handed me $2530.80 today and said “You absolutely must spend $2530.80 on a handbag right now”, I’d buy this clutch from Edie Parker. Never have I known such deep bag lust as this.
4. My husband is a keen fisherman and particularly likes catching squid. However, he often loses squid jigs. When I discovered that jigs can cost up to $60 a pop, I went a little mental. I won’t bore you with the details of the discussion that followed, or my reasoning for the outcome but we agreed that at the end of the year I could buy a handbag equivalent to the cost of the lost jigs (as I said, don’t question the logic). So far, the tally is $280.
5. Which means my husband has to lose another 38 fancy jigs before Happy! is mine (highly unlikely – he’s quite good at catching squid).
6. Ferris Fest.
7. I saw the movie Brooklyn this week* (screenplay by Nick Hornby, adapted from Colm Toibin’s book). It was beautiful (and I’m not saying that just because I love a bit of Irish-misery-porn).
8. A friend sent me this article about ‘birthday words’. It’s fascinating to see how words reveal changes in cultural values and trends – ciao in 1929; blast-off in 1951; beat-box in 1988 and dad rock in 1994. Some words seem to have become part of the language much earlier than I would have imagined (back-to-nature in 1915; mobile phone in 1945), and others seem later (gasp in 1968; gobsmacked in 1985). Anyway, I’m glad my birthday word isn’t jeggings…
9. And a Twitter buddy sent me this article about The Complete Review. I loved it.
10. And lastly, but by no means least, everyone saw the pic below on Twitter, right? I. CAN’T. WAIT.
Bookish Thoughts is hosted by Christine at Bookishly Boisterous. Pop over and say hi.
*thank you to Shelleyrae at Book’d Out for the tickets.
Bueller …. Bueller … Bueller…. Geez, I loved that movie. Ferris Fest is a great idea. I wonder if Chicago will also have an ER Fest one day? Noah Wyle could have his own float …
I think J needs strong encouragement to fish often. That clutch is gorgeous.
And George Clooney an even bigger float… 😉
Kate…”Irish-misery-porn”? I think you’ve coined a new literary/cinematic genre. I was already planning on seeing “Brooklyn”…now I won’t bother waiting until it’s available on pay-for-view.
Half of my relatives are from Brooklyn (NY), including my mother; I would categorize their genre as Jewish-misery-comedy.
Pretty sure I picked up Irish-misery-porn from somewhere but until that’s verified, I’ll claim it 😉 You certainly get points for Jewish-misery-comedy.
Don’t wait for Brooklyn – if you still have a chance to see it on the big screen, get to it. I loved it so, so much.
Ferris fest! I feel better knowing this is a thing 🙂
Just wish it was a thing all around the world…
White Night looks fabulous! Loved Brooklyn, one of the few film adaptations that lives up to the book which was an extraordinarily tall order in this case.
Shamefully I admit that I haven’t read Brooklyn (yet). But I really want to now!
Haha! That deal you and your husband have going on sounds pretty good to me!
Interesting articles shared.
Now to sabotaging those fishing lines… 😀
New Hannah Kent! Thanks for the heads up 🙂
*can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait*
I cannot wait for Hannah Kent’s latest novel! 😀
I still have yet to read Brooklyn and watch the movie. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Haha, the deal you made with your husband sounds pretty fair 😉
The new Hannah Kent is one of the six books I’ll be allowing myself to buy this year. Still haven’t bought any (although the Stella Prize shortlist is announced in a fortnight so my allowance could be wiped in an instant!).
I think I missed my chance with Brooklyn…but I’m going to keep trying. And I LOVED Ferris Bueller….
Here’s MY BOOKISH THURSDAY POST
It’s only just opened in Australia – movies seem to be on a very different timetable here! Worth seeking out if you can.
4. Seems like a air deal to me.
6. Yes!
10. I cannot wait.
4. I’m glad everyone’s on my side about this bag 🙂
White night sounds amazing and looks gorgeous! I would definitely wake up at 3:45 to see it.
Any deal that gets you a new handbag is a good deal. Even with questionable logic, haha.
My birthday word is emoticon. I guess I could live with that. Such an interesting chart! I want to look up the birthday words for everyone I know now.
The birthday word article is fascinating – I’m going to write a blog post for my kids’ school about the words that define that generation of kids.
LOVE that clutch. And I didn’t see the news on Hannah Kent—that’s exciting!
