Sample Saturday is when I wade through the eleventy billion samples I have downloaded on my Kindle. I’m slowly chipping away and deciding whether it’s buy or bye.
All About Lulu by Jonathan Evison
Why I have it: Downloaded a week ago. No idea why. Was I drunk? (you know how some people do drunk-online-shopping? Maybe I do book samples…)
Summary: William Miller experiences weakness in many forms – he’s vegetarian in a family of bodybuilders; he has a crush on his new step-sister, Lulu. A male coming-of-age story that’s apparently not YA.
I’m thinking: Yes – first chapters were funny, a little heartbreaking and suitably awkward.
Relativity by Antonia Hayes
Why I have it: a book about “science, love, unbreakable bonds and irreversible acts”? Yes please.
Summary: A boy is obsessed with physics and astronomy. He lives with his mother, who is great, but the boy wonders about his dad. The boy falls ill and everything is turned on its head.
I’m thinking: Yes. It’s going to make me cry though, isn’t it?
Only the Animals by Ceridwen Dovey
Why I have it: Winner of the Readings New Australian Writing Award
Summary: History from an animal perspective.
I’m thinking: No. I’m sure this book is terribly clever but it’s not for me.
Relativity sounds interesting! I’m really bad at reading samples, I tend to just impulse shop e-books.
I used to impulse shop as well but my virtual shelves are groaning so I try to get samples first. It doesn’t always work though!
Relativity gets my vote. I’m a drunk online shopper – ebay is the worst, I end up biddling on the most random things….
Ha! And no doubt hoping the next day that you get outbid?!
Oh yes! Sadly it doesn’t always happen though – let’s just say I’m going for the eclectic look in m my home 😉
Oh, I used to hang out with Antonia! We’ve lost contact over the years, but there you go. She always did have a way with words!
Melbourne really is such a small town 🙂
