Before I start throwing words like ‘cliché’ and ‘stereotypical’ around, I should probably say that Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler just wasn’t the book for me.

The story is told from the point-of-view of two characters, Isabelle and Dorrie, and moves back and forth between 1930s Kentucky and the present day. The plot centres around interracial relationships and forbidden love.

The book is well-written but I did feel like I’d been there before. A good twist toward the end took me by surprise (although maybe if I had been reading in a more engaged way, I would have seen it coming), and the shifts between the present and past keep the story moving along.

2/5 As I said, not the book for me (but I’m in the minority on Goodreads where it gets a whopping 4.23).

Read Calling Me Home with Texas Fries – I didn’t know that cheese fries were also called Texas fries until I hit Google. I’ve never had them but I’m fairly certain they’d be delicious. Because: carbs and cheese. Skinnytaste has a ‘guiltless’ recipe for Texas Fries (guiltless…really?!).
