Bookish (and not so bookish) Thoughts

1. I’m still here. Don’t be jealous.

2. Because of no.1, this list is unlikely to make it to no.10.

3. Unless I keep writing stupid crap like that. And this.

4. Seriously, time for some substance.

5. Saw two movies with the kids – Free Birds and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. You probably should be aware that my husband and I have developed a highly useful and accurate rating system for kids movies – in short, we rate them on a scale of shit to really shit.

Firstly, Free Birds. By God, it tested the outer-edges of the ‘really shit’ end of the scale. Terrible.

Then there was Walter Mitty. I loved it. I might have even got something in my eye at the very end. I read a review that described it as a “…major movie in a minor key…” – yes. Needless to say, my usual rating system doesn’t apply.

6. To the tele I’ve been watching – Banshee. Holy crap. I’ve never seen so many guns, so many punch-ups and so many body parts sawn/cut/ chopped/ bitten off in one television show. Without question the most violent thing I’ve ever watched – but I couldn’t tear my eyes away. Might have had something to do with the star – Anthony Starr. Who happens to look a little like Scott Speedman. I did a little Starr-Speedman-side-by-side because I’m generous like that.

Season two of Banshee is currently showing in the US – not sure how long I’ll have to wait for it to appear in Australia (but if you’re reading this Jonathan Tropper and you know the answer, please leave a comment).

7. I need a format for my Re-Read Reading Challenge reviews (say that quickly after a few gin and tonics). No point writing standard reviews because all the books I plan on re-reading have been reviewed eleventy billion times and I’m fairly sure no one will give two figs about what I have to say. So, a literary mix-tape? Or perhaps a literary menu? Is there such a thing or did I just invent it?

8. Other things about my week that I’d like to talk about but can’t because the interwebs at the beach house is crap – boutique gin, teaching my kids how to snorkel, London plans and author love. It can wait for next week. In the meantime, thoughts on Anthony Starr and Scott Speedman?

As usual, this meme is hosted by Bookishly Boisterous. You’d be mad not to get involved.

  1. Did you ever watch Felicity? I loved it when I was younger. You (and your beach vacation) made it into my bookish thoughts this week. I’m all about the literary mix-tape or the literary menu.

I hope it snows when you are in London. That’s all.

(I’m mostly kidding about the snow, though did you know we got five inches of fresh snow in Colorado this morning? So I wouldn’t be sad. Also, holy god those two look alike.)

    • I LOVED Felicity (so much so that the name Felicity was almost chosen for my daughter). And I really love(d) Scott Speedman. Needless to say, it was a good use of time searching Google images for pics of Starr and Speedman.

I am mentally preparing for snow in London and hoping it isn’t so. As I’ve mentioned, I don’t do cold weather. In preparation I’ve bought waterproof, non-slip boots and a down jacket – bought online from US because can’t get that kind of gear here, especially in January! Of course, because I’ve spent a vast sum on warm clothes it means they won’t be needed, right?!

Your mention of our beach pics made my day BTW. Thanks. K x

  2. Can I say how jealous I am of your beach view right now? I’m looking at snow, snow and more snow with -13 and below weather. I’ve been meaning to watch Walter Mitty sometime (maybe with a cup of hot chocolate?) and I’m glad that you like it.

  3. #1 — Gorgeous. Can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a place where the sky is so blue and just stretches on endlessly that way…

#5 — Glad to hear The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was good! I really want to see it, the trailer looked gorgeous 🙂

Looking forward to seeing however you reformat your re-reading challenge 😉 Both sound very exciting (in my case, most of the books I’m planning on re-reading have never been reviewed on my blog, but I’d love to do more just solely-discussion/anaylsis (or flailing, depending) posts or something…)

  4. London. It’s 7:45 am, the day is waking and the beautiful, warm, golden, sun is rising for another glorious day………….at least I’m sure it is somewhere, but it’s not shining in bloody London!! I read this looking out at mist, frost and a palette of grey, grey and more grey. God I’m jealous! I thought this was very funny though so you cheered up the crappy start to my Saturday morning! Still jealous though!

    • Ha! The funny thing is that in a few weeks, I’ll be in London! I keep sending messages to the friend I am visiting asking about the weather “How cold is it?”, “Tell me there’s no snow…” – I don’t do cold weather very well! (But will manage for my brief London visit!).
