Why did it take me so long to discover the (written) wisdom of Nora Ephron? Who knows but I loved Heartburn when I read it earlier this year. Linda Yellin must also love Nora Ephron because she’s based her latest book, What Nora Knew, around all the romantic advice that can be gleaned from Ephron’s romantic comedies – sort of like what Julie and Julia was to cooking.
Although it’s not released until January 2014, I’ve managed to get my hands on an ARC and thought it would be a good one to share for Bibliophile by the Sea’s First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday. It begins –
“Ten minutes after saying “I do” at the Garden City Hotel in Long Island, I was already having my doubts. But how do say “I don’t” to a man who’s considered ‘quite the catch’. Everyone was constantly telling me – even strangers – that Evan Naboshek, of the firm Naboshek, Halla , and Weiss, was a fabulous hell of a prize.
In answer to the question, should anyone ask, “So how’d you two lovebirds meet?” – it started when lovebird #1 stepped out of a cab into a puddle. I was trying to open my umbrella at the same time I was juggling my grocery bags, spilling tomatoes, peppers, onions, three frozen-lemonade cans, and a dozen eggs onto the sidewalk. A dashing stranger went dashing after my produce, holding his umbrella aloft like Don Quixote. That did it. I fell in love.”
Need to know a little more? It’s the story of Molly, a cynical thirty-nine-year-old divorced writer living in New York City who wants her own column, a Wikipedia entry, and to never end up in her family’s Long Island upholstery business. Fearing she can’t recognise romance, Molly tries to navigate the tricky waters of New York dating with pointers from Nora Ephron’s comedies.
I can’t wait to get started on this one – the perfect, light distraction as we stream-roll into the frenzy that is Christmas. What do you think?

I have preordered this one…love Nora Ephron, so a book about someone trying to mimic the romantic “Ephron” moments….I just had to grab this one. I can imagine how much fun this read will be….thanks for sharing.

I have a book by Nora Ephron on my shelf but have yet to read it. I admit I never gave her books a second glance until after hearing about her death. This new one does sound good! I’ll be curious to know what you think when you are done.
