This week’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, was supposed to be about happy bookish memories. But it has turned into my book NIGHTMARE. And it’s all because of this man:
When I saw the topic, Top Ten Bookish Memories, I was mentally preparing a list that included the first time my oldest boy brought me a book, climbed into my lap and demanded “Weed it!”; my love of Milly-Molly-Mandy; getting caught reading under the covers; discovering the awesome power of a ‘series’ (Sweet Valley High when I was thirteen) and more.
My list was going to be topped by a big, show-offy picture of my personally SIGNED copy of Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe.
But I can’t find my book. I have turned the house upside down and inside out to no avail. It has never left my house. I would never lend it to anyone (because hello, Rob Lowe’s signature). Has it been stolen?! My husband is unclear as to how this is ruining my week. But hello – Rob Lowe.

So there’s no top ten happy bookish thoughts from me this week… just one bookish-catastrophe. I’m off to declare a state-of-emergency (and to keep hunting).
That is a bit of a tragedy. In a similarly sad occurrence, I’ve lost my copy of Empire Falls. I lent it to my teenage brother who swears he doesn’t have.
However, you did get to include a clip of The Hotel New Hampshire (my favorite John Irving novel), so all is not lost (though it sort of is). Not surprisingly, he’s on my list.
There’s always a way to work Irving in, as you know!
Oh dear – here’s wishing you every possible crevice check in the house … and a soon-to-be-found copy of the book!!

Ha! I know how you feel… But still, it’s worrying when you can’t find a book you love.
well that’s one heck of a catching paragraph! So sad about the missing book but hopefully it’s just hiding for a spell and will turn up soon.

I’ve been meaning to read John Irving forever, but I haven’t gotten around to it. He does actually make an appearance in my TTT list though! Which book would you recommend I read first?
Start with either A Prayer for Owen Meany or The Cider House Rules. Both are fantastic.
I do a regular Friday post highlighting older books, and just featured Hotel New Hampshire about 2 weeks ago. I love all the early stuff — Garp, 158-Pound Marriage, etc. A bit behind on more recent Irving books, though.
I’ve read all of his books (most of them more than once). Of his more recent stuff, Last Night at Twisted River shines – truly one of his best books.
I was thinking Prayer for Owen Meany would be a good one to start with — the event I went to included a reading from that book and I did always want to read it, but haven’t quite gotten around to it — thanks for the recommendation!

Hope it turns up. My entire knowledge of Rob Lowe is from watching West Wing and I loved him in that.
Oddly, I haven’t watched West Wing. It started around the time I was having babies (which went on for YEARS…I have four kids!) – as a result I could never commit to anything on tv! Now that I’ve got all my kids off to school, I’m thinking of starting it from the beginning (catching up on Mad Men first!).
